Yatterman 1977 Character Biography: Dokurobei (Part 2)

As with the rest of the Yatterman cast, Dokurobei makes an appearance in the Time Bokan: Royal Revival OVAs. He first appears at end of the first episode to congratulate the Dorombo gang for winning the race. He then “rewarded” the trio with a trip to a lava pit in order to train for the next episode.

Dokurobei shows up again in the second episode posing as Togurobei, (Toguro is Japanese for coil) sending the Dorombo gang to the Tatsunoko Kingdom to get the Toguro Stone. When all’s said and done, he once again punishes the trio since he states it’s to be expected by Time Bokan fans. This time he does it by unleashing Matatabinga (Catnip Man in the dub) on them, the character from Dorombo’s fake OVA at the beginning of the episode.

Oddly enough, Dokurobei is entirely absent from Heisei Time Bokan, which might explain why the Dorombo gang try a good natured “social reform” at first. Even their return to criminal activity in the second story arc is fairly laxed without Dokurobei breathing down their necks.

He makes a brief cameo at the end of Bokan to Ippatsu: Dorombo, where as usual he punishes the Dorombo gang by firing a missle at them. Due to the low budget this game had, Dokurobei wasn’t voiced by his usual VA Junpei Takiguchi.

Dokurobei takes on a more prominent role in it’s sequel Bokandesuyo, where on the game’s hard difficulty he orders the the Dorombo gang to defeat all the Time Bokan protagonists, with the promise of making the trio the main characters of the next Time Bokan series. He even gifts the Dorombo gang with a vehicle in his likeness (the Dokurobei Car) if they manage to get through the bonus stage.

It’s later revealed that Dokurobei’s true motive is to take over the Time Bokan series himself and make it “Time Dokurobei”, and he promptly casts aside the Dorombo gang. They don’t take this lying down, so they stage an assault on his base and fight Dokurobei in a mecha of his own.

Although they managed to win, the trio’s humiliated by the Yatterman shortly afterwards, and Dokurobei gets the last laugh by launching a bomb at them from orbit as “punishment”.

In Bokan GoGoGo, Dokurobei commands all the villanous trios from the entire series (barring Kiramekiman) to find and locate a pair of magical tulips. The first group to obtain it will get another chance at the spotlight, hence why it’s another race.

In every ending, Dokurobei never gets to obtain the tulips either due to the greediness of the the villianous trios or the heroes arriving to stop them. I’ll go into more details surrounding these endings when I write the summaries for these trios as a whole, but here’s what happens to Doku-chan in the Dorombo gang’s ending:

Back With Some Updates

After dealing with stress IRL I’ve returned yet again, hopefully for good this time, and I have a lot to say.:

First of all, huge, huge thanks to NoraInuG for fan-translating the 1977 Yatterman series, and at such a rapid pace too with nearly half of the 108 episodes completed! He’s a veteran that actually tried his hand at translating Yatterman in the 90s, and it’s because of the great fan community that he’s been able to resume this monumental task again. If you haven’t already, check out and subscribe to his Youtube Channel for the Yatterman subs and other fansubbed anime, and I’ll post the episodes here whenever he finishes one.

Apparently the fansubs of the original Time Bokan still fall upon me, and while I did made progress on the first ten episodes over a year ago I still have quite a ways to go. I am really sorry that this is taking so long, and it’s inexcusable that I haven’t produced the results that everyone’s been wanting for so long. To that end, I’m going to dedicate as much time as I can to ensure that the original series will get subbed soon. I don’t mean or want to disappoint anyone, and I need to seriously work on this for everyone’s sake.

To focus on that among other non-Time Bokan projects, I’ve decided to step down from doing bios and such for the foreseeable future. Would you rather me spend time jumping around shows for screencaps and a brief synopsis for a series you don’t understand, or should I actually sit down and fully translate one of the series so you can see for yourself the zaniness of Time Bokan?

That said, in addition to the previously mention fansubs, posts from my old Tumblr will occasionally be added here with some updates (bigger images, updated information, and extra tidbits that may or may not come from other fans), and I’ll answer questions, post and answer any contributions, maybe even see if others want to write something for this site.

I’m so happy to see how the fanbase has grown over the last few years. I merely tried to bring attention to the Time Bokan series, but it’s the dedication from TimeBokanMan, Calva-Kun, NoraInuG and many others that has expanded the fanbase with their outstanding handling of the Discord server among many other contributions. I owe so much to you all, and I hope I can still lend a hand to the great and amazing Time Bokan community.

Time Bokan Character Biography: Grocky

Grocky (also spelt as Glocky, called Captain Arrow in the Time Fighters dub and Platypus in the lost Harmony Gold dub) is the brains behind Marjo’s gang in the original Time Bokan, and the one that set the precedent for Boyacky and his successors. His name is derived from the word “groggy”, specifically how it’s pronounced in Japanese as “gurokki”. Some have speculated that he’s named after a type of gun called a Glock, but that didn’t exist until 1979, two years after the original show.

He served as an assistant to Dr. Kieta and helped developed the Time Bokan (Time Mechabuton) alongside the doctor, Tanpei, Junko, and Chorobo. In truth, he was a spy for his true superior Marjo, and was planning to take the time machine and use it to make some form of profit for her.

When Dr. Kieta’s test run of the time machine resulted in it returning without him and with Parrosuke instead, Grocky noticed the parrot was wearing a rare jewel around his neck known as a Dynamond. While Tanpei, Junko, and Chorobo were discussing plans to rescue the missing doctor, Grocky took the Dynamond back to Marjo and Walsa.

The next day Grocky made his true nature known to the Time Bokan crew and held them at gunpoint with the intent of letting Marjo’s gang commandeer the Time Bokan and have Parrosuke lead them to more Dynamonds. The heroes are able to easily outwit the trio and take off in the ship, but using his prior knowledge of how the machine worked, Grocky was able to quickly make a time machine for Marjo, Walsa, and himself to travel around in, the Gaikottsu.

As the most intelligent of Marjo’s gang (which isn’t saying much), Grocky specializes in designing the animal-themed mechas that are built around the Gaikottsu, usually putting hatches on the rear for the gang to enter in and out of. It’s implied in one episode that he’s also capable of turning actual animals such as a small frog into giant mechas.

Despite his knack at making mechas, Grocky can be oblivious to his surroundings and is very clumsy. Even the simple act of preparing a mecha can result in a mishap such as the mecha interior becoming extremely hot or even destroying Marjo’s mansion. And whenever he plans a “highlight” attack on the Time Bokan crew, he never bothers to see it in motion in the event that it backfires. (which it always does). Even the simple act of preparing a mecha can result in a mishap such as the mecha interior becoming extremely hot or even destroying Marjo’s mansion.

Grocky has quite a quirky, if somewhat subservient, personality. He constantly mutters, especially when he’s frustrated, and he has a habit of hitting on just about everyone (male or female). With that said, he has no qualms about hurting or ruining peoples’ lives if it means getting Dynamonds.

Although Grocky constantly disagrees with Marjo’s decisions, he’s fiercely loyal to her no matter what. It’s made obvious that it’s because he harbors romantic feelings for her, and obeys her in the futile hope that she’ll return them. When she’s reduced to a stark raving mad looney at the end of the series, he still reluctantly continues to follow her.

An Important Announcement

The bad news is that brand new biographies and articles are going to be coming to an halt for a while. Most of what will be uploaded will be stuff that was uploaded on Tumblr, with some refinements and higher quality images.

The good news is that’s because I’m fully resuming my intended fan translation of the original Time Bokan series! It was halted early on due to IRL issues, but now that I’m back in the Time Bokan funk I want to give this another crack and see that this gets the localization that’s long overdue. See the Fan Translation page for more information!

Also, you can join this site and post articles yourself! All you need is a WordPress account. Check the Contribute page to see how you can help there.

Lastly, I’ve updated the Links to include the Time Bokan Discord and sites from good friends that you should support if you haven’t already.

Gyakuten! Ippatsuman Character Biography: Con Cordo

Con Cordo (spelt as Kon Korudo onscreen in one instance) is the head chairwoman of the Skull Lease and the overall antagonist of Gyakuten Ippatsuman. She usually sends the Clean Aku trio to sabotage Time Lease activity, although her overall goal is seeing that the Skull Lease dominates the world.

Cordo appears as a short, elderly Chinese woman whose face is partially obscured by her arms most of the time. Although she was initially obscured by shadows, whatever shred of mystery is dropped early on by the time her granddaughter Min-Min is properly introduced.

Unlike the other bosses of the Time Bokan series, Con Cordo has no particular verbal tic. She does open and end most of her messages with the phrase “Inai inai bababa!” which equates to “I’m not an old hag!”, which she sometimes alternates with “Inai inai eta!” or “I’m not a dirty person!”.

Cordo has an effective and ruthlessness personality that’s offset by her comedic appearance. She has little tolerance for failure despite putting up with the Clean Aku trio, and greatly commends success to employees that do their jobs well and encourages them to keep up the good work. For most of the series, the only people she respects are Tamashiro and Min-Min, although the latter’s hi-jinks throw even Con Cordo for a loop.

Whenever she’s about to inform the Clean Aku trio of Time Lease activity, she usually sends a signal through Mun-Mun’s ring to summon them. While most of these meetings are held in a secret computer room in Mun-Mun’s office, she’s capable of contacting them wherever they are through just about any device.

To spite and motivate the Clean Aku trio, she’ll sometimes bring up Tamashiro to check on his progress as a reminder of how pathetic they are. On many occasions she’ll get into arguments with Kosuinen over his treatment as the director of his branch, although sometimes Cordo will work out a deal with him in his favor (but not necessary that of Mun-Mun and Kyokanchin’s).

(Spoilers for Ippatsuman below, read at your own peril)

It’s revealed at the end of the series that “Con Cordo” and “Min-Min” were both aliases and one and the same, and her true form is that of an alien seeking control of the entire universe. Believing that humanity was too self-destructive and greedy to be allowed to explore the galaxy, she planned to get the Psychic Robot data from the Time Lease and enslave Earth first.

The Skull Lease was set up around eight years prior to achieve this goal, with the Northern Ostendai Branch and her disguise as Min-Min to monitor the Time Lease, and reviving Tamashiro as a cyborg to steal information and directly attack Ippatsuman.

Her trump card was Time Lease manager Haruka, who was under Con Cordo’s control all along ever since an encounter between the two eight years ago. With the Skull Lease dissolved due to bankruptcy and Tamashiro disposed of due to recent countless failures, Haruka still manages to obtain the complete Psychic Robot data and set Con Cordo’s final plan in motion.

Con Cordo lures the Time Lease crew and the Clean Aku trio to her hideout, a misty area full of jagged peaks, and reveals her true nature and plans to them. Shen then proceeds to have Haruka, wearing a Psychic Robot suit, to do away with Ippatsuman and eventually everyone else, using a staff frequently during the battle to both enhance Haruka’s power and keep her under Cordo’s control.

After Haruka breaks free from control with help from Ran, Cordo attempts to bring her back only for Haruka to lose her powers and suit. Con Cordo then attempts to flee in her UFO only for Ippatsuman to take control of his Sankan-Oh and destroy it, doing away with the alien once and for all.

This marks a rare death in the entirety of the Time Bokan series, and unlike other characters who are presumed dead she and her alter-ego Min-Min do not appear or are even mentioned in spin-offs at all.

Yatterman 2008 Character Biography: Doronjo

Doronjo is back in the 2008 reiteration of Yatterman, with a more revealing outfit and a cursive D standing for “Doronjo” rather than “Dorombo”, with her goal to find the Dokuro Rings and wish for eternal wealth and beauty. As with the rest of the trio, she constantly makes fourth wall jokes which implies that it’s the same Doronjo that appeared 31 years ago (at the time this series debuted) in the original show.

She keeps most of her traits from previous appearances, but goes to more effort to keep her identity a secret, always wearing a mask and wig when pulling a con. She’s also more easily drawn in to anything that fits her interests, (wealth, handsome men, expressions of love) and usually gets pulled out of them the hard way (usually via explosion). Due to changing standards since 1977, her habit of smoking and losing her clothes were toned down, although they are subsituted with creative workarounds.

The romantic tension between Doronjo and Gan-chan is a bit more subtle, but teased every now and then. The most prominent case occurs in 35th episode, Farewell! Dorombo’s Finally Disbandoned, Koron! Doronjo (and the rest of the cast) has a dream where she obtained all the Dokuro Rings and married Yatterman-1/Gan-chan. Upon waking up from said dream, she bonks her head, which leaves her in a lovesick daze for most of the episode.

In the final episode, her wish is revealed to be pining for a lover, specifically Yatterman-1, and that Doronjo’s real age is implied to be around 32 in this continuity. (again coinciding with the time passed since the original Yatterman first aired.)

When the end result turns out fruitless and nearly having their hearts sucked out, Doronjo again disbandons the Dorombo gang and proceeds to part ways. She’s given a time machine from Boyacky to find a time period where she can obtain eternal beauty, but ultimately she can’t stand to be seperated from her friends, and the feeling is mutual. So she and her gang return to their hideout and continue to have fun together as the Dorombo gang for a little longer (or as long as it will take to find 50 Dokuro Rings)

With Yoru no Yatterman / Yatterman Night taking place hundreds of years after either previous show, the real Doronjo doesn’t make an appearance. But in the final episode, she delievers the very last line to her decendant Leopard: “Good night. Sweet dreams.”

Yatterman 1977 Character Biography: Doronjo

Doronjo, real name Hiroko Sasagawa, is the beautiful masked leader of the Dorombo gang. A bumbling thief at the age of 24 (or so she claims), she and her equally inept henchmen Boyacky and Tonzura seek out the Dokuro Stone for the mysterious Dokurobei with the promise of a huge amount of wealth.

Doronjo’s “name” is based on the Japanese word “doronko”, meaning “muddy” or “dirty”, something that’s brought up often by various characters. Her reason for starting the Dorombo gang and seeking the Dokuro Stone was to become the richest and most admired woman in the world, although it’s been hinted that what she really wants is to simply settle down and raise a family.

Although she retains previous villain Marjo’s traits of being vain, selfish, and impatient, Doronjo is significantly nicer to her subordinates Boyacky and Tonzura, even though their antics can get on nerves. She’s quick to praise them for achieveing something, and just as quick to scold them (mostly Boyacky) if they blunder. Despite her recklessness, she’s fairly intelligent and quite a smooth talker, which is best seen when she’s pulling a con or trying to get Dokurobei to reveal himself.

Doronjo plans out most of the scams and activities when searching for a Dokuro Stone fragment. During the earlier episodes her face can clearly be seen when in a disguise, although later on she wore a mask When it comes to battling the Yatterman, she has Boyacky and Tonzura do the fighting for her most of the time and at most uses the mecha they were travelling in to pick them up when they lose. Occasionally, the destruction of the Dorombo gang’s mecha will result in her clothes being shredded to revealing levels, although this can happen to all three members.

Her favorite food is french fries and she has a strong dislike of rats, although there is an good reason for the latter. When she was a little girl she came accross a rat that bit down hard on her nose. Because of that trumatic event, she’s absolutely horrified whenever a Yatterman mecha deploys mini-mechas resembling rats or mice.

Towards the end of the series, she begins to have second thoughts about her career as a thief. She develops feelings for Yatterman-1 (Gan-chan) which are obviously unrequited, and at one point imagines the conflict going on to the point where they’re all elderly. When the Dokuro Stone and the truth behind it are revealed and leave the Dorombo gang shocked and with nothing to show for it, Doronjo tearfully disbandons the gang and they go their seperate ways.

Afterwards, Doronjo got married and became the mother of five children, and according to Heisei Time Bokan she also opened up a bar named “Buchikku Dorombo”, decorated with Time Bokan memoribillia. However, she missed the fun she had with the Dorombo gang, and be it the starring role in a OVA, a chance to defeat all the various Time Bokan heroes, or an attempt at a social reform, Doronjo would bring the gang back together for more hijinks during the 90s.

Being the only playable villain in the game, Doronjo is a fighter in both versions Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, with Boyacky and Tonzura assisting her with some of her moves. Notably, this is a rare instance of her directly fighting an opponent rather than relying entirely on her goons. This is prominent after winning a fight where she’s clearly exhausted from having to physically attack someone.

Lost to Time: Time Bokan Express: Daredaman

Today I’m going to be talking about one of the scrapped ideas for a Time Bokan series, Time Bokan Express: Daredaman! Planned as the eighth show after Itadakiman, it was set to return to the style of Yattodetaman and Ippatsuman with a style similar to the western 1930s for the characters and initial setting.

The premise involved a time-travelling train similar to Zenderman’s train motif, although with the ability to transform into a mecha like the Gyakuten-Oh in Ippatsuman. Created by the “Time Express HG” for tourism, a mysterious man known as SondeMonde and three bumbling gangsters attempt to use it to locate an artifact known as the Devil’s Horseshoe. To stop them, the great Daredaman would appear to combat them with the train-turned mecha.

Our main protagonist would have been Aro Ayumu Kunikida, a rich detective youth and presumably Daredaman, although what he would have looked like as the titular hero is unknown. Accompanying him on his adventures are Mayu Koganei, a magazine reporter girl, and Michael, a young boy who always carried a small computer with him.

The evil trio of this series would have been modeled after 1930s gangsters. Pandoll, who would apparently carry a rifle around with her, Herohero, a crafty magician, and Tonnel, a young brute. Under the orders of the mysterious SondeMonde, they would steal treasures throughout time in the hopes of obtaining the Devil’s Horseshoe. Apparently, this trio would be juggling their family lives in addition to their criminal activity.

Itadakiman’s failure stopped this from becoming a reality, and eventually the team lost interest in making another “serious” Time Bokan entry. What do you think about this cancelled concept for the series?
